North devon is lettered along the extreme south-west corner and tiverton along the southern border, both hunts whose territory extended across the county line from devon; west somerset, in yellow, covers the western half around exmoor and minehead; blackmore vale, in pink, follows the southern edge toward the dorset border; and mr farquharson's country, in orange, holds the south-east corner. The somerset levels, the flat ground around glastonbury and bridgwater in the centre of the county, carry no hunt colour, marking low-lying country unsuited to conventional fox hunting. Exmoor's hill country in the west is rendered in dense hachure, the mendips run across the north of the sheet, and the bristol channel coast from minehead to weston-super-mare is drawn in careful detail. A reference table for the hundreds fills a substantial part of the lower half, and the cartouche sits at upper right. The atlas was compiled by william colling hobson, with maps engraved by john and charles walker, the london firm of j. And c. Walker, and published by longman and company of paternoster row. First issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, hobson's fox-hunting atlas maps every county of england and the three ridings of yorkshire. This sheet belongs to the edition of circa 1870 and is a steel engraving, its hunt boundaries in original hand colour, applied in outline. This antique fox hunting map of somersetshire is an original sheet from the atlas and is suitable for framing; it is of particular interest to hunting families, to collectors of the county and to anyone with a connection to the place. The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light age toning, stronger towards the edges, a central fold and a few small spots in the margins. Please review the images for further condition details. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed. See less
