Walker circa 1870, is set apart from most sheets in the atlas because no hunt boundary is coloured on it. The hand colour, in pink, yellow and green, follows the county's ancient wards instead, west ward, kendal ward and others, as keyed in the reference table at lower right, dividing the county into its western and eastern divisions for parliamentary purposes. No hunt name is lettered anywhere on the sheet. The county's mountainous character, the lakeland fells in the west around kirkby lonsdale and the kendal district, is rendered in dense hachure shading, with windermere and the other principal lakes drawn in blue and the main road and rail routes north through kendal and penrith traced in red. The cartouche, with the county name and the walker imprint, occupies the upper left corner above the statistical note and a list of boroughs. The atlas was compiled by william colling hobson, with maps engraved by john and charles walker, the london firm of j. And c. Walker, and published by longman and company of paternoster row. First issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, hobson's fox-hunting atlas maps every county of england and the three ridings of yorkshire, elsewhere adding the boundaries of the hunt countries in hand colour. This sheet belongs to the edition of circa 1870 and is a steel engraving, its original hand colour applied in outline. On this sheet the colour marks civil wards, not a hunting country. An original atlas sheet, suitable for framing, this antique hobson county map of westmorland will appeal to hunting families, to collectors of the county and to anyone with a connection to the place. The sheet is in good condition for its age, with age toning, stronger towards the edges, a central fold and a few small spots in the margins. Please review the images for further condition details. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed. See less
