Watercolor "Bullring" by Félix Cuadrado Lomas, 20th Century - Simancas Group
An exquisite watercolor by Félix Cuadrado Lomas, belonging to the Simancas Group. The work reflects the artist's characteristic style, based on a fluid and seemingly simple drawing technique, with which he achieves a highly expressive representation. The landscape is rendered through a restrained and precise application of watercolor, which lends lightness and luminosity to the composition. Signed in the lower left corner.
Félix Cuadrado Lomas (Valladolid, 1930-2021) was one of the most prominent artists on the Valladolid art scene of the second half of the 20th century. Specializing primarily in the Castilian landscape, he developed a personal style in which the observation of the land is combined with a progressive synthesis of forms and a marked expressive sensitivity. He was a member of the Simancas Group, a fundamental collective for the renewal of the visual arts in Castile and León. In 2017, he declined the Castile and León Arts Prize.
The Simancas Group, active between 1967 and 2007, brought together a distinguished group of artists and intellectuals connected to Valladolid and the town of Simancas. Its origins lie in the meetings and discussions that, from the early 1960s, took place around the Relieve Bookstore in Valladolid, developing more as a circle of friendship and intellectual exchange than as an artistic movement bound by a shared aesthetic doctrine.
Among its members were Félix Cuadrado Lomas, Jorge Vidal, Domingo Criado, Gabino Gaona, and Fernando Santiago (Jacobo), a painter and gallery owner. Although their approaches and styles were diverse, they shared a desire for renewal and an openness to the languages of modernity, with a particular emphasis on Expressionism. The Castilian landscape became one of their main areas of research, approached from a contemporary perspective that allowed them to transcend its merely descriptive representation, transforming it into a space of synthesis, emotion, and plastic expression.
