Space Age Table Lamp, 1970s - Italy
A magnificent Space Age table lamp, made in Italy around the 1970s. It features a distinctly sculptural composition, dominated by a large, spherical white opal glass globe positioned at the center of a chromed steel structure. The sphere is surrounded by a chromed ring that embraces it and is, in turn, inscribed within a second, wider, outer circular ring. The use of opal glass and chromed steel surfaces is one of the most recognizable characteristics of Italian lighting design from the 1960s and 1970s. It is more reminiscent of a small kinetic sculpture or a futuristic object than a conventional lamp. Its formal conception fully embodies the Italian Space Age aesthetic, which during those years was particularly interested in orbital forms, spherical volumes, and circular structures. It retains its original wiring, and the chromed steel is in very good condition.
