Exquisite valet tray Le Portel, made in France during the 1970s. Slightly octagonal in shape, it features a glaze in shades of brown, orange, and green, creating a vibrant, organic surface. Stylistically, it is reminiscent of French ceramics inspired by Vallauris. However, its formal and decorative treatment also reveals clear affinities with the ceramic tradition of Desvres, an important pottery center in northern France.
Le Portel Ceramics
The Fourmaintraux family is one of the great dynasties of ceramicists from Desvres, a major center for the production of ceramics and earthenware in northern France. Established in Desvres since the beginning of the 19th century, the family developed an intense manufacturing activity for generations, which decisively contributed to the prestige of the region's ceramics. Within this tradition, a piece also appears that is linked to Le Portel, a town located in the nearby Côte d’Opale, known as “la porteloise,” and produced by the ceramist Gil Vicente Franco in the workshops of Gabriel Fourmaintraux. This connection places the name “Le Portel” within the context of the important ceramic tradition of Desvres and the production developed by the Fourmaintraux family in northern France.
