Italian suspended wardrobe and coat rack dating from the 1960s, characterized by a particularly rational design and an unusual structural solution for its period. Designed to be wall-mounted, the vertically developed cabinet combines a clean visual presence with a high degree of functionality.
The cabinet is crafted in teak, with a warm brown-golden tone and clearly visible horizontal grain. The front is defined by a sequence of overlapping horizontal wooden slats, creating a regular rhythm across the surface while visually reducing the impact of its considerable height. The slatted construction is therefore not merely decorative, but an essential part of the cabinet's identity.
Its most distinctive feature is the suspended tilting mechanism. When opened, the cabinet reveals an interior fitted with a clothes rail and metal hooks, while maintaining a relatively shallow profile when closed. This solution provides a practical wardrobe without the presence of a conventional floor-standing cabinet, reflecting the Italian design tradition of the 1960s and its growing interest in flexibility and efficient use of space.
The construction is deliberately restrained. Two broad, perfectly vertical side panels frame the slatted front and emphasize its strong geometric character. The continuous wood surfaces and absence of unnecessary ornament give the piece an almost architectural quality, as though it were conceived as an integrated element of the wall rather than simply placed against it.
A particularly interesting piece for collectors of Italian Mid-Century design, especially because this type of suspended wardrobe is considerably less common than the traditional cabinets and coat racks of the period. Its vertical proportions, wall-mounted construction and tilting opening mechanism make it a distinctive example of the practical experimentation that characterized Italian furniture design during the 1960s.
