This type of lamp was particularly appreciated in Roman interiors during the 1970s, a period when fascination with the Orient was widespread throughout Italian design and interiors. Bronze sculptures and other decorative objects imported from Asia were often reinterpreted by skilled Italian artisans and transformed into sophisticated furnishings, becoming the focal and precious elements of lamps, occasional tables, and other decorative pieces. In the present example, a bronze sculpture depicting a Thai Singha Lion, or Foo Dog, is mounted on a polished travertine pedestal. A gracefully curved solid brass element rises from the base to support the lamp holder, creating an elegant contrast between the warm tones of the metal and the natural beauty of the stone. The lampshade was recently handcrafted by an artisan based on the original design, which had deteriorated over time. The lamp is in good vintage condition and is fully functional.
