A richly decorated Italian majolica pitcher featuring a dramatic griffin or dragon motif rendered in deep cobalt blue, ochre, iron red, cream and metallic luster.
The rounded body is painted with a large scrolling mythical creature against a saturated cobalt ground, surrounded by foliate ornament and a white quatrefoil medallion. Around the flared neck, repeating fan-shaped floral panels create a strong architectural rhythm, while the shaped spout and substantial loop handle emphasize the piece’s sculptural character.
Metallic copper-gold luster highlights the decoration throughout, catching the light across the rim, body and foot. The palette and ornament draw on the long Italian Renaissance and Renaissance Revival majolica tradition, particularly the decorative vocabulary associated with central Italian pottery centers such as Deruta and Gualdo Tadino.
This example is unattributed to a specific workshop, so we would not claim a maker without further evidence.
A bold decorative piece with strong presence, equally suited to a majolica collection, mantel display or layered traditional interior.
Approximately 6.5" H x 7" W x 5" D.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with light surface wear and minor irregularities consistent with hand-painted ceramic and age. No chips, cracks, etc. Small spot of paint flake. Please review images closely for condition and handmade variations.
