Hand-knotted in premium wool, this contemporary 9x12 rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Art Deco collection. The design layout explores minimalist architectural abstraction, featuring a highly tactile geometric grid that is inspired by *bas-relief *textures, executed in a soothing palette of soft beige and cream.
On the Design:
While Art Deco emerged from the 1925 Paris *Exposition Internationale* celebrated for opulent materials and vivid colors, the movement matured into a radically different aesthetic by the 1930s. Alongside the rise of international modernist architecture, vanguard textile artists championed a highly disciplined, structural approach to weaving. They were in favor of stark, machine-age geometries and monochromatic palettes, treating the rug not merely as a decorative floor covering, but as a textured extension of the room's architecture. This contemporary carpet brilliantly revives that specific late-Deco philosophy through a masterful high-low weaving technique.
Admirers of the craft may admire our contemporary Art Deco rug for its exceptional monochromatic execution, utilizing premium wool to achieve a beautifully soothing, organic beige canvas. Designers may also admire the strict, repeating grid of square compartments, where abstract and interlocking motifs reminiscent of stepped architectural molding emerge through a striking *bas-relief *effect. Connoisseurs may admire this proprietary high-low technique that relies on a dense, raised pile set against a flatwoven ground rather than contrasting dyes, allowing the shifting light and shadow of the room to dictate the geometric pattern. The interior grid is expertly framed by a broad, unadorned solid beige border that effortlessly grounds the dynamic internal texture and provides a clean visual boundary. This structural approach, alongside the sculptural elements detailed here, represents R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor the minimalist, machine-age elegance of the 1930s. The Art Deco Collection is a contribution to that historical legacy, offering a highly tactile architectural base perfectly suited for contemporary and minimal spaces. The accompanying book, Japandi Living: Framing the Harmony of Japanese and Scandinavian Design by Laila Rietbergen, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B161) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
