Hand-knotted in premium wool, this contemporary 9x12 rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Art Deco collection. Celebrating the radical late-1920s evolution of Art Deco design, the rug features a plush double-height pile, a bold chocolate brown Cubist motif, and architectural line work set across an expansive beige field.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may admire how this contemporary Art Deco rug brilliantly executes this spatial philosophy, utilizing a stark central Cubist design to elevate the layout into a dynamic architectural foundation. The commanding *central motif *rendered in deep chocolate brown similar to bold rectilinear forms, interlocking channels, and stepped geometry directly echo the Cubist abstraction and Moroccan tribal layouts that captivated the Parisian avant-garde. Connoisseurs may admire the meticulously woven *striated* bands that frame the perimeter, where tight, parallel lines of chocolate brown form an intricate labyrinth. These dynamic striations wrap the outer edges and project sharply into the negative space with architectural precision, creating a continuous momentum that visually expands the floor rather than confining it within a traditional, static border. This structural approach, alongside the sculptural depth and Cubist framing detailed here, represents R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor the transformative, architectural vision of late Art Deco design. The Art Deco Collection is a contribution to that historical legacy, offering a deeply tactile, grounding foundation perfectly suited for contemporary, minimal, and haute-couture interiors.
Around 1927, a profound ethos shift transformed the Art Deco movement. Early textile designs dominated by vibrant floral motifs and gave way to a resolved, radical aesthetic deeply influenced by Cubist abstraction, architectural rigor, and the raw geometric authenticity of North African designs. Traditional borders dissolved, allowing broad, neutral fields of single color to spread across the canvas without interruption. This new philosophy re-envisioned the rug not as an artwork hung on a wall, but as an opulent, warm "pavement"—a tactile surface strictly occupying its own planar level in space, richer underfoot than marble or mosaic. By recasting the rug as the floor itself, these borderless layouts transform the spectator into a "figure-on-ground" who steps into the artwork rather than merely observing it from afar.
