Handwoven in mohair and premium wool, this monumental 17x32 oversized contemporary flatweave joins Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian collection. The design features a continuous, borderless Cubist lattice executed in a cool, sophisticated palette of crisp cream, silver-gray, and deep slate.
On the Design:
Swedish textile history is internationally renowned for its mathematical precision and complex geometric vocabulary, rooted deeply in traditional *rölakan* techniques that required exact, meticulous loom work. When visionary Scandinavian designers sought to modernize the craft in the mid-twentieth century, this inherent technical precision proved to be the perfect vehicle for the avant-garde principles of Cubism and functionalist architecture or *Funkis*. By stripping away floral motifs and eschewing traditional borders in favor of continuous, edge-to-edge patterns, they transformed the rug from a confined decorative object into an expansive architectural plane. This monumental oversized carpet masterfully executes that borderless philosophy, utilizing its immense scale to visually stretch the spatial boundaries of the room it anchors.
Admirers of the craft may admire this piece as a triumph of spatial geometry, utilizing mohair coming from angora goats, and premium wool to create a crisp, luminous foundation of cream, silver-gray, and deep slate. The avant-garde *isometric tessellation*—a rhythmic, interlocking sequence of triangles and parallelograms folds into one another to project a striking three-dimensional optical illusion across the vast canvas. Connoisseurs may admire the meticulous hand-spinning of the yarns, which introduces a gentle, natural *abrash*—a subtle tonal striation within the geometric blocks that softens the strict mathematical precision of the lattice, ensuring this monumental piece feels intimately organic rather than starkly synthetic. This contemporary flatweave further enjoys our reputed, heavier body with buckle resistance and greater durability against foot traffic, staying perfectly stable underfoot without a single ripple. A versatile, sophisticated contribution to the Swedish Deco aesthetic. The accompanying book, Rena Dumas: An Interior Architecture by Chloé Braunstein-Kriegel, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim.
