This is a wonderful painting. And so much fun. . .
Conceived on a crisp autumn day roaming the Warren Woods in Michigan (SOOO many years ago) our son thought that these nearly leafless trees looked like "tree ghosts" dancing in the wind---clinging to the last little bits of bright Orange Halloween. Ergo, the name GHOST TREES.
Uncharacteristic of his great body of work, George's uncharacteristically heavy outlining of each structure lends to each an almost 2-dimensional cartoonish vibe to the structures. Each tree seems to enjoy its own anthropomorphic "gesture"; each appears to be dancing in place, rhythmically waving its branch-y arms.
This palette is controlled. Lots of subtle mauves and grays alongside browns and ochres--all juxtaposed by determined little bits of orange--stubbornly clinging until the final gust of wind.
As to style--very difficult to label. But as usual, the paint is thick, the colors are as varied as they are subtle, and the brushwork is exquisite.
