Hand-knotted in wool and mohair, this 12x18 contemporary oversized rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Modern collection, showcasing an architectural high-low Greek fret maze layout in warm cream and soft ivory tones.
On the Design:
The Greek fret motif, or meander meandros stands as one of the most enduring elements in classical architectural ornamentation, with origins stretching back to ancient Aegean pottery, Roman stone mosaics, and neoclassical building friezes. Symbolizing eternity and fluid continuity, this right-angled geometry was widely adopted throughout 18th-century European neoclassical design and 19th-century French Empire interiors. During the mid-century modern movement, interior architects adapted these ancient linear forms to explore structural relief and tactile depth, prioritizing fiber character and light interaction over colorful embellishment. This contemporary oversized creation honors that classical lineage, executing the historic fretwork pattern through a specialized high-low pile construction that pairs fine hand-spun New Zealand wool with natural mohair yarns. Precision shearing creates hand-carved channels along every right angle, capturing ambient light to define the geometric layout and creating a quiet, three-dimensional study in architectural texture for large-scale interiors.
The surface presents an expansive, all-over interlocking grid of stylized Greek key motifs and geometric pathways that unfold across the broad field. Rendered in a clean, multi-tonal palette of rich cream and soft ivory, the design relies on directional light to highlight its carved structural pathways. The addition of premium mohair yarns imparts a subtle, lustrous sheen to the raised geometric ridges, providing a refined contrast against the matte, recessed wool background. Natural micro-variations within the un-dyed fibers introduce subtle tonal depth and organic warmth across the surface, ensuring the precise geometric layout feels balanced rather than cold or rigid. Finished with clean, hand-bound selvages, this work serves as an elevated, storytelling foundation for modern gallery spaces, grand living rooms, and curated architectural residences. The accompanying book, Jacques Grange by Pierre Passebon, with photography by François Halard, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B117) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
