Handmade in natural abaca, this 9x12 contemporary rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Modern collection, showcasing a special-weave construction with a bold graphic wave grid sequence in deep navy blue and warm oat beige.
On the Design:
The incorporation of natural plant fibers into high-end floor coverings represents an important movement in contemporary craft history, rooted in mid-century organic modernism and eco-conscious architectural design. Derived from the stalks of the Musa textilis banana plant, abaca fiber has long been prized across South Pacific maritime traditions for its remarkable tensile strength, moisture resistance, and crisp, lustrous character. Modern textile studios have elevated this raw material into an art-grade medium through specialized construction techniques, replacing traditional flat-loom practices with sculptural hand-stitching and braided rope assembly. This piece honors that craft evolution, translating geometric abstraction into a three-dimensional physical landscape. The open field celebrates the raw, unadulterated beauty of plant fiber, where the physical heft of hand-spiraled ropes catches ambient light to establish a dynamic, tactile presence underfoot.
The surface presents a deeply detailed, multi-tonal study in high-contrast organic geometry and architectural rhythm. An all-over interlocking network of stylized leaf and teardrop modules expands across the field, establishing a fluid diagonal movement. Rendered in saturated passes of rich navy blue and grounding oat-beige, the alternating shapes create a dramatic play of positive and negative space. Each geometric module is painstakingly formed from concentric, hand-coiled abaca braids, whose natural grain and directional weave introduce fine micro-variations and subtle tonal depth within each color block. The raised, rope-like outlines cast delicate directional shadows across the surface, giving the graphic motif an expressive, sculpted relief. Lined with a durable canvas backing to preserve its structural alignment, this work serves as an elevated, storytelling anchor for gallery-inspired environments, coastal retreats, and curated contemporary interiors. The accompanying book, Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style by Linda Jane Holden, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B049) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
