Handmade in abaca, this 8x10 contemporary rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Modern Classics collection, showcasing a special-weave construction with iconic Central Asian suzani medallions in brick red, gold, and indigo blue.
On the Design:
The suzani textile heritage of Central Asia holds a celebrated place in global decorative history, originating as hand-embroidered dowry panels created across Silk Road trading centers like Samarkand and Bukhara. Historically prized for their vibrant astral medallions, flowering vines, and protective solar motifs, these textiles represented a deeply personal expression of family legacy, craftsmanship, and regional identity. Modern textile ateliers have long sought to honor this historic needlework, yet translating such delicate embroidery into a durable, floor-grade medium remained an artistic challenge. This contemporary creation achieves that synthesis through an extraordinary specialized craft technique, using pure, unadulterated abaca plant fibers to reinterpret 19th-century suzani art into a tactile, three-dimensional physical reality. The open layout presents repeating solar rosettes and interconnected floral stems, utilizing the structural density of hand-coiled strands to capture ambient light with a dramatic, sculptural relief that pays homage to ancient Central Asian embroidery traditions.
The visual surface presents a deeply detailed, multi-tonal study in high-contrast organic abstraction, establishing a harmonious dialogue between saturated jewel tones and rich natural fibers. Saturated brick-red solar discs anchor the layout, framed by radiating golden-wheat starburst motifs and scalloped medallion borders. Interconnecting these large circular medallions are delicate trailing vines executed in deep indigo blue and teal, terminating in stylized floral buds and leafy tendrils. Each motif is meticulously built from hand-spiraled, hand-stitched abaca ropes, whose natural fiber grain introduces subtle micro-tonal variations alongside the smooth gold highlights. The raised, rope-like ridges cast soft directional shadows across the surface, giving the historic suzani iconography an expressive, sculpted relief underfoot. Lined with a protective canvas backing to preserve its structural integrity, this work offers an art-grade, storytelling centerpiece for curated architectural settings, gallery-inspired spaces, and elevated contemporary interiors. The accompanying book, Central Asian Textiles: The Neville Kingston Collection by Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B290) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
