A set of six antique American Shaker ladder back dining chairs with hand-woven rush seats, a classic of American folk craft furniture making.
The Shaker tradition produced some of the most enduring furniture forms in American history, built on the conviction that utility and beauty are the same thing. The ladder back chair, so called for the horizontal slats that climb the back like rungs, is the Shaker form that most completely embodies that philosophy. Simple, strong, and completely resolved.
These six chairs have been carefully restored. The frames are ebonized, a rich, deep black finish that gives the chairs a graphic quality that works as well in a contemporary interior as in a period one. The rush seats are original and intact, hand-woven in the traditional diagonal pattern. The rush has the warm amber tone that comes from genuine age, not replaced.
The ladder backs on these chairs are notably tall, at 42 inches they have real presence at a dining table, elongating the visual height of the room. The seat at 17.5 inches is a standard dining height and comfortable for extended meals.
They wear their age honestly. There are signs of use and life consistent with antique furniture, minor wear at the feet, slight variation between chairs as you'd expect from hand-made pieces, the occasional small imperfection in the rush. We've noted everything visible in the photos.
