Hand-knotted in wool, this 11x15 contemporary oversized rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Art Deco collection, featuring a graphic Chinese Deco abstract layout of overlapping arcs and stepped geometric motifs in sage green, rust, and dusty rose.
On the Design:
The Chinese Art Deco weaving movement of the 1920s and 1930s represents a defining moment in 20th-century decorative art, capturing an unprecedented dialogue between Eastern textile craftsmanship and Western modernist geometry. Emerging primarily out of Tianjin and Shanghai, workshop master weavers moved away from classical Imperial layouts and centuries of formal dragon or floral symbolism. In their place, workshops introduced expansive spatial openness, painterly color blocking, and dynamic biomorphic forms inspired by European art movements. This contemporary creation honors that historic design era, reinterpreting vintage 1930s Tianjin textile art into an architectural layout. Fine hand-spun wool yarns yield a soft, plush pile that absorbs ambient light, giving the chromatic shapes a subtle matte depth. By balancing historic geometric abstraction with East Asian color harmony, the piece celebrates a celebrated chapter in global carpet design.
The visual landscape presents a deeply detailed study in overlapping geometry, painterly scale, and subtle chromatic contrast. Sweeping across the broad field is a sequence of intersecting arcs, fan-shaped scales, and stepped zig-zag bands that evoke vintage Deco fan motifs and architectural paneling. A grounding field of soft sage green and muted olive establishes an understated foundation for accents of saturated terracotta, dusty rose, mauve, and parchment-cream. Each geometric segment is defined by precise line work and stepped dark-chocolate borders, creating a dimensional visual rhythm underfoot. Natural yarn abrash introduces subtle tonal variations within each color block, giving the repeating fan network an organic, hand-rendered character. Finished with clean, hand-bound selvages, this work serves as an elevated, storytelling centerpiece for grand living rooms, gallery spaces, and curated architectural interiors. The accompanying book, The Decorative Carpet: Fine Handmade Rugs in Contemporary Interiors by Alix G. Perrachon, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B391) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
