On the Design:
The evolution of modern textural weaving marks an important movement in 20th-century decorative art, moving decisively away from figurative ornament in favor of structural purity, material character, and natural light interaction. Originating during the post-war mid-century movement, avant-garde textile artists began exploring raw fiber behavior, utilizing subtle directional variations to give floor coverings an architectural, low-relief quality. This design honors that minimalist tradition by drawing upon South Asian sari silk heritage, reinterpreting reclaimed silk yarns through an understated, contemporary lens. By eliminating overt pattern and decorative borders, the expansive field highlights the natural behavior of hand-spun fibers. High knotting density paired with precise low-shearing allows the material's innate luster to establish a quiet, light-responsive presence across large-scale interiors, offering a sophisticated study in material purity.
The field presents a deeply nuanced, multi-tonal study in metallic earth tones and fine linear striations. Running continuously across the entire layout is a subtle horizontal grain, where delicate micro-variations in yarn saturation create a soft, directional sheen that reacts predictably to ambient illumination. The chromatic palette shifts fluidly across the surface, transitioning from deep metallic taupe and burnished bronze to soft slate gray, muted pewter, and warm champagne highlights. Hand-spun sari silk yarns yield a refined abrash effect, forming parallel striations that soften the monochromatic depth without disrupting its visual continuity. Sheared to a low, tailored pile height, the carpet provides structural stability underfoot while maintaining a smooth, tactile surface. Finished with clean, hand-bound selvages, this piece serves as a quiet, storytelling foundation for modern art galleries, grand living spaces, and curated architectural environments. The accompanying book, Jacques Grange by Pierre Passebon, with photography by François Halard, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B117) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
