Handwoven in cotton, this 8x10 contemporary flatweave rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Dhurrie collection, featuring a modern architectural grid of nested blue rectangles framed by gold accent lines.
On the Design:
The tradition of Indian cotton dhurrie production holds a distinguished place in South Asian textile history, dating back centuries as an essential art form prized for its light-flooded, breathable structure and remarkable durability across regional estates. Historically utilized in royal residences and public pavilion gatherings, these textiles were celebrated for their crisp graphic clarity and unadulterated material integrity. During the mid-to-late 20th century, regional weaving hubs began reinterpreting these ancient loom traditions through the lens of post-war architectural minimalism, discarding ornate traditional florals in favor of constructivist geometry and structural balance. This piece honors that historical trajectory, distilling classic South Asian hand-loom heritage into an understated, graphic work that connects centuries-old craft discipline with modern architectural sensibilities.
The visual layout presents an intricate, multi-tonal study in cool metallic shades and warm grounding neutrals. An allover grid of nested, rectangular modules expands across the field, executed in alternating passes of sky blue and teal. Framing each geometric block are double-lined accent bars of warm gold and unbleached oatmeal, carrying razor-sharp alignment that emphasizes spatial rhythm and structural order. Subtle yarn abrash, inherent to hand-spun natural cotton fibers, introduces delicate, painterly shifts in saturation within the slate-blue fields, preventing the repeating grid from feeling static or printed. Finished with a sleek, low-profile edge, this work serves as a sophisticated, storytelling centerpiece for gallery-inspired environments, grand corridors, and elevated architectural interiors. The accompanying book, Relaxed Elegance by Brittany Bromley, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B178) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
