Handmade in abaca, this 8x10 contemporary rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Mid-Century Modern collection, showcasing a special-weave construction with biomorphic, free-flowing graphic swirls in brick red, beige, and cream.
On the Design:
Mid-century modernism revolutionized 20th-century decorative art, marking a decisive shift away from rigid symmetrical frameworks toward fluid, biomorphic abstraction and organic architectural forms. Visionary painters and textile designers of the era embraced the beauty of free-flowing line work, using continuous curves to evoke natural growth, living energy, and sculpted balance. At the same time, mid-century artisans sought to re-evaluate raw plant fibers, elevating humble natural materials into art-grade mediums through innovative structural weaving techniques. This contemporary creation honors that transformative design philosophy, using a specialized craft technique in pure abaca plant fiber to translate expressive, painterly abstraction into a physical, three-dimensional form. The open field features an interconnected, free-flowing labyrinth of serpentine ribbons that sweeps across the layout, utilizing the structural density of hand-coiled plant strands to catch ambient light and create a dramatic, organic relief underfoot.
The surface unfolds as an intricate, multi-tonal study in high-contrast organic abstraction, establishing a sophisticated dialogue between deep earth tones and luminous neutral highlights. A rich, atmospheric brick-red field serves as the grounding foundation, setting off a sprawling, continuous network of coiled ribbons rendered in soft oatmeal-beige, parchment-white, and warm cream. Each curving motif and looping tendril is meticulously built from spiraled, hand-stitched abaca strands, whose natural directional grain introduces fine micro-variations and subtle tonal depth within each light-toned band. The raised, rope-like ridges cast delicate directional shadows across the underlying field, creating a dynamic visual landscape where the biomorphic line work appears to physically emerge from the canvas. Lined with a protective canvas backing to ensure long-term structural alignment, this work serves as an art-grade, storytelling anchor for gallery-inspired environments, architectural residences, and elevated contemporary interiors. The accompanying book, Jacques Grange by Pierre Passebon, with photography by François Halard, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B117) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
