Hand-knotted in wool, originating circa 1950-1959, this 5x21 vintage Turkish gallery runner joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection, featuring an extra-long midnight-navy field filled with an intricate crimson and camel floral lattice.
On the Design:
Anatolian workshop weaving of the mid-20th century represents a monumental convergence of imperial Ottoman court refinement and centuries-old regional folk-art traditions. During the post-war era of the 1950s, master artisans across Turkey's historic weaving centers undertook a deliberate revival of classical 17th- and 18th-century courtly iconography, translating complex city patterns through a disciplined, architectural lens specifically scaled for grand gallery spaces and expansive architectural corridors. This extra-long vintage carpet exemplifies that mid-century masterwork, stretching an intricate, continuous floral narrative across an extraordinary length with absolute mathematical precision and visual rhythm. Crafted with hand-carded, lanolin-rich sheep’s wool, the dense, low-shorn pile showcases a magnificent time-earned patina that catches ambient light with an elusive, velvet-like sheen, preserving decades of authentic Anatolian textile heritage and artisanal soul.
The visual landscape presents a deeply saturated, multi-layered study in classical chromatic theory, establishing a commanding contrast between an expansive, shadowy ground and luminous jewel-toned accents. Densely populating the midnight-navy field is a complex, infinitely repeating all-over lattice composed of spiraling, leafy vine-scrolls, stylized lotus-flower palmettes, and delicate blossoming sprigs, rendered in rich madder crimson, soft dusty rose, golden camel-tan, and ice-blue notes. Framing this long botanical expanse is a magnificent multi-tiered border architecture—anchored by a broad, camel-ground main border carrying alternating geometric rosettes and serrated leaf tendrils, bounded by deep indigo inner and outer guard lines. Subtle organic fluctuations in dye saturation and natural yarn abrash impart a shimmering, painterly depth across the entire dark surface, ensuring the intricate botanical network feels continuously alive and fluid under changing illumination. Offering rare monumental scale and profound historical gravity, this vintage piece stands as a museum-caliber centerpiece for discerning collectors, visionary design trade projects, and elevated interior spaces. The accompanying book, The Decorative Carpet: Fine Handmade Rugs in Contemporary Interiors by Alix G. Perrachon, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B391) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
