On the Design:
These photos represent a 12x18 contemporary custom rug from a collection representing the genesis of textural minimalism as a global movement emerged in the post-war era of the late 1950s and 1960s, born as a deliberate rebellion against the cluttered, ornamental density of traditional floor coverings. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—which elevates the organic, unadulterated beauty of raw materials—and the stripped-down functionalism of modernism, visionary ateliers realized that when overt pattern is erased, the material itself must become the sole narrative medium. This oversized carpet stands as a physical statement of that philosophy within contemporary textile art, utilizing pure, hand-spun natural silk to translate elemental geometry into an expansive, tactile landscape. Executed with rigorous structural discipline across a massive scale, the unadorned layout allows the intrinsic material properties of the yarn to take center stage, capturing ambient light with an iridescent sheen that imparts an atmospheric, ever-shifting presence underfoot.
The surface presents an exceptionally detailed, multi-tonal study in understated luxury, organized around an all-over repeating geometric network of meticulously sculpted, oval-pebbled modules. Each individual pebble is crafted in a dense, raised pile technique using high-grade natural silk, creating a tactile pebble-beach effect that yields an extraordinarily soft, cushioned handle. The raised silk modules transition fluidly between alternating passes of cool platinum, warm taupe, gray, and stone greige, set against a recessed, flat-woven ground of unbleached cream. Executed with precise low-relief carving around the perimeter of every single oval, the high-low pile structure casts subtle, shifting directional shadows across the lower pile layers. Because pure silk possesses extraordinary refractive qualities, these subtle tonal channels react dynamically to movement and changing daylight—causing the metallic taupe and silver hues to gleam, mute, or deepen depending on the vantage point and angle of illumination. Fine micro-variations and natural luster within the hand-spun yarns ensure the repeating grid remains fluid and organic rather than rigid or mechanical. Bounded by a clean, borderless edge that lets the pebbled lattice extend uninterrupted to the selvage, this oversized piece serves as a sophisticated, storytelling anchor for grand living rooms, curated architectural spaces, and elevated contemporary interiors. The accompanying book, Shamshiri by Pamela Shamshiri, Ramin Shamshiri, and Mayer Rus, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B289) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
