An exceptional antique French sheet dating to circa 1900, beautifully made from a substantial cotton and linen blend with a wonderfully luxurious weight and texture.
The highlight is the magnificent hand embroidered CS monogram, worked twice across the upper portion of the sheet and surrounded by graceful sprays of flowers, leaves and scrolling embroidery. The white-on-white embroidery is beautifully raised against the softly textured fabric, giving the monogram wonderful dimension.
The sheet is traditionally constructed with a center seam, a characteristic detail found in early French household linens when narrower widths of fabric were joined by hand to create a generously sized bed sheet. A wide finished upper border completes the piece.
The heavier cotton-linen fabric gives this sheet a particularly beautiful drape and makes it equally lovely used traditionally as bedding or styled as a light coverlet or decorative bed layer.
A wonderful example of the elaborate monogrammed linens once prepared for a French trousseau, made to last for generations and personalized for the household that would inherit them.
