An elaborate three-piece porcelain ensemble with individually modelled flowers and foliage, painted bouquets, butterflies and insects. Branching handles on the teapot, a flower-topped domed cover and a scalloped stand carry complementary decoration, enriched with gilt borders and scrollwork.
The combination of sculpted blossoms and painted natural subjects recalls the Coalbrookdale tradition associated with Coalport and early nineteenth-century English porcelain. Its interest lies in the marriage of ceramic modelling and miniature painting: flowers project beyond the vessel’s surface, transforming a familiar covered-cup form into a small botanical sculpture.
