This antique circa 1900 Samarkand rug is distinguished by an unusual and highly decorative composition centered around a series of large vase or vessel motifs arranged across the field. Rising from and around these monumental vessels are tall stylized trees, branching stems, geometric leaves, and small botanical elements, creating a garden-inspired design with a strong architectural quality. Rather than relying on a conventional central medallion, the rug uses the repeated vases and upright tree forms to establish rhythm and balance across its approximately 8'7" x 5'0" format.
The field is dominated by a beautifully softened brick red and terracotta ground, complemented by muted camel, sand, beige, antique gold, olive, sage green, dusty rose, charcoal, brown, and faded black. The subdued palette and large-scale drawing give the rug a particularly atmospheric appearance, while the multiple borders contain smaller floral and geometric elements that frame the central vase-and-tree composition.
The rug reflects the distinctive decorative character associated with historic Samarkand weaving, where botanical imagery is frequently interpreted through simplified, geometric forms. The large vessels are especially important to this particular piece, giving it an immediately recognizable design and distinguishing it from more conventional floral or medallion carpets.
