An exceptional early Navajo weaving distinguished by its dramatic geometric composition and sophisticated use of natural, undyed wool in black, ivory, charcoal, gray and subtle brown-gray tones.
The design features three powerful geometric formations arranged vertically through the field. Large serrated diamond and stepped motifs are rendered in sharply contrasting black and ivory, creating a striking sense of movement against the beautifully variegated gray ground. The central composition expands horizontally across the field, while the upper and lower elements provide strong symmetry and visual balance.
One of the most attractive features is the natural variation within the gray and brown-gray wool. Rather than appearing as a single flat color, the field displays subtle bands and tonal changes produced by different shades of naturally colored wool. This gives the weaving considerable depth and an unmistakably hand-crafted character.
A broad warm ivory inner border surrounds the field, enclosed by a substantial black outer border. The restrained natural palette, strong serrated geometry and carefully balanced composition relate the weaving to the early Crystal tradition and the developing Two Grey Hills aesthetic of the early twentieth century. Crystal/J.B. Moore designs of the early 1900s are recognized as important predecessors to the later established Two Grey Hills style.
