Set of two Japanese stone tanuki, one male and one female, dating from circa 1960, Shōwa period, Japan. Both figures are heavily made from solid stone and feature a characterful hand-carved design.
Dimensions per tanuki: height 32 cm, width 30 cm, depth 28 cm.
Weight: male tanuki 40 kg, female tanuki 34 kg, total weight 74 kg.
The two figures clearly form a matching pair, each with its own individual details and posture. Their rounded forms, simple facial features and visible carving marks give the sculptures a strong folkloric character.
The figures are in good vintage condition, with normal signs of age and use, light surface wear and minor irregularities consistent with their age, material and hand-carved finish.
Tanuki are a well-known motif in Japanese folk culture and are traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. with their substantial weight and unusual male-and-female pairing, these sculptures form a particularly decorative Japanese set.
