Set of two Japanese Buddhist altar candlesticks, dating from circa 1910, late Meiji period, Japan. The candlesticks feature slender reddish-brown lacquered stems with gold-coloured decorative elements at the top and base.
Dimensions: height 46 cm, diameter 10 cm.
The upper section is shaped like a stylised flower calyx, with the candle spike positioned at the centre. The base is also richly decorated, with flowing lines running down the gold-coloured surface that resemble roots or spreading plant forms, giving the candlesticks a strong botanical character.
The combination of reddish-brown lacquer and gold-coloured detailing gives the pair a warm and stately appearance. Visible signs of age and use are consistent with their age and ceremonial function.
