Egbert Bruckner
1912 Krefeld – 2001 Haar
"In the Shadow of Tomorrow (The Last Act)"
Monogrammed and dated upper left (1948), signed and dated verso (mid-June 1948)
Ink (brush and pen) on light cardboard ("Bristol") ---unframed---
Size: 65.2 x 50 cm
According to the artist's inscription on the reverse, the drawing "In the Shadow of Tomorrow (The Last Act)" was created in Obergrainau in mid-June 1948. The work belongs to the series of dark, somber pieces in which Bruckner processed the war years through drawing. At the same time, the artist is already taking a step further here toward a more abstract, surreal style of representation.

Egbert Bruckner
Painter, draftsman, graphic artist, stage designer.
Initially, he studied for three semesters at the Cologne School of Applied Arts (under Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann), followed by six semesters at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
Around 1940, Bruckner lived in Düsseldorf and worked as a painter (Kreuzstraße 54).
A large part of his work from that period was lost due to wartime destruction.
After the Second World War, he initially lived in Obergrainau (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district) and later moved to Munich (Hildegardstraße 5) to work as a painter and graphic artist.
from about 1950 onward, Bruckner's art became more abstract. Influences from M.C. Escher also became apparent, leading to surrealist depictions.
