This set has a late 19th-century British patent registration diamond mark and the maker’s initials E.J.D.B. for E.J.D. Bodley of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. Features blue and white with faux bamboo handles. The turquoise and blue prunus/cherry blossom palette heavily leans into the Japonisme wave of the late 1870s.
• Maker: Edwin James Drew Bodley (active c. 1875–1892 at the Hill Pottery).
• Mark Features: A diamond-shaped British Patent Office registration mark (used to date the specific shape or design registration) alongside the printed initials “E.J.D.B.”
• Style: Aesthetic Movement / Japonisme style, characterized by turquoise-blue and white prunus or floral blossom relief-molding with gilt highlights.
This registration mark confirms that the design shape and relief-molded Aesthetic Movement motif were officially patented by the E.J.D. Bodley pottery on this specific day. The item itself would have been manufactured shortly thereafter, between 1879 and the early 1880s.
The turquoise and blue prunus/cherry blossom palette heavily leans into the Japonisme wave of the late 1870s. This specific relief-molded motif is historically significant and highly sought after compared to plain floral transfers or standard neoclassical borders.
