c. 1910s/1920s; W. A. B. Trotter, Optometrist - Knoxville, TN
Antique reverse-painted glass over foil sign.
This sign comes from the optometry practice of William Andrew Bowerman Trotter, a lifelong Tennessee native. Trotter's practice was one of many tenants in The Cherokee Building, located in Knoxville's South Market Historic District.
The sign features a black reverse-painted glass panel with stenciled negative space lettering. Beneath this layer is a foil sheet that has been cut away to allow for the painted letters to show through; each letter boasts painted embellishments that appear slightly raised.
