Antique wooden safe panel by Herring & Co. of New York, dating to the 1870s and originally fitted to one of the company's "New Patent Champion" safes. The panel retains a prominent Dexter combination mechanism at the center, surrounded by decorative painted and lettered graphics identifying the patented design and its December 12, 1871 patent date. A row of illustrated exhibition medals along the lower portion advertises awards received by the manufacturer, while gold, black, and red detailing contrasts with the richly toned wood surface. Removed from its original safe, the panel now stands as an unusual piece of 19th-century American industrial and commercial history.
