In Urban Renewal, two unmistakable Seattle landmarks, the Space Needle and Monorail, remain standing while the surrounding city has been transformed. Water has returned to the former streets, vegetation has overtaken the urban landscape, and grizzly bears fish for salmon where people and traffic once moved through downtown.

The image belongs to Wistrom’s distinctive body of work imagining familiar cities after nature has moved back in. What initially appears post-apocalyptic becomes unexpectedly peaceful: wildlife has returned, salmon again move through the water, and Seattle remains recognizable even as its purpose has completely changed.

Wistrom created Urban Renewal during the 1990s. According to the artist’s studio, the image was an immediate hit and the original limited-edition lithographs sold out.

This example comes from that sold-out numbered lithograph edition and is pencil signed by Tim Wistrom, titled “Urban Renewal,” and numbered 413/950 beneath the image.

Presented under glazing with matting in a simple black frame. The restrained presentation allows the unusually detailed composition and saturated blue-green palette to remain the focus.
