Abstract depiction of a screaming horse
Monogrammed, signed, and dated lower right (1950)
Watercolor, ink, and pencil on light cardboard, mounted on cardboard, verso with adhesive tape under a mat mask ---unframed---
Size: 29 x 41.3 cm (viewing area) / 31.2 x 49.8 cm (backing cardboard) / 45 x 62 cm (mat mask)
Provenance: November 24, 2005, Von Zezschwitz, Munich, Auction, Lot 1087 ("Composition")
The motif of the screaming, tormented horse appears repeatedly in art after 1945, and one might particularly think of the bronze work "Lamenting Horse" by Marino Marini, which was also created in 1950. Bruckner also depicts the horse without a rider. It is a lament of the abandoned creature, which Bruckner conveys to the viewer in an exceptionally dense and thoughtfully colored way.

Egbert Bruckner
Painter, draftsman, graphic artist, stage designer.
He initially studied for three semesters at the Cologne School of Applied Arts (under Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann), followed by six semesters at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
Around 1940, Bruckner lived in Düsseldorf and worked as a painter (Kreuzstraße 54).
A large part of his work from that time was lost due to wartime destruction.
After the Second World War, he initially lived in Obergrainau (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district) and later moved to Munich (Hildegardstraße 5) to work as a painter and graphic artist.
from about 1950 onward, Bruckner's art became more abstract. Furthermore, influences from M.C. Escher are evident, leading to surreal depictions.
