This large 19th-century wooden door comes from a traditional Andalusian farmhouse in Málaga, southern Spain, and has been transformed with an expressive hand-painted composition of tuna. Tentatively dated to the late 20th century, the painting brings the spirit of the Mediterranean to a historic piece of rural Andalusian architecture. The aged wood and luminous marine iconography converge in a work that evokes the coastal landscape of Málaga, where the sea meets the mountains.
Against a worn brick-red background, the fish unfold in shades of blue, gray, and silvery-white. Their varying scale and opposing directions lend dynamism across the elongated surface, with a large central tuna structuring the composition. Dark outlines, highlights, and visible brushstrokes give volume to the figures, while the warm background enhances the cool palette of their bodies.
The door itself is an essential element of the work. The vertical wooden planks, the prominent grain, and the rounded metal nails lend texture and relief to the painted surface. The composition extends over these irregularities, integrating the wood's physical character. On the back, the horizontal reinforcing crossbeams reveal the original construction technique.
The wood shows wear and deterioration from prolonged exposure to the elements, with cracks, surface erosion, and localized material loss. On the reverse, a fastening system using fibers and white paint is visible, designed to consolidate the panel structure. The lower right corner remains particularly fragile and may shed small fragments of wood when moved, requiring careful handling.
