Striking pair of handmade Brutalist iron candleholders, circa 1970.
Each candleholder features a tall rectangular openwork structure raised on a central stem and a square base. The iron has been worked and welded by hand, creating an expressive, highly textured surface composed of irregular organic openings and numerous small applied metal nodules.
The same raw, sculptural treatment continues throughout the pieces, including the stems and openwork square bases. Visible welding, irregular surfaces and raised metal details are integral to the design and give each candleholder its distinctive Brutalist character.
The handcrafted construction results in subtle differences between the two pieces, making each one individual while forming a cohesive pair.
A particularly decorative example of Brutalist metalwork from the second half of the 20th century, equally appealing as functional candleholders or as sculptural objects.
Sold as a pair. Candles not included.
