A wonderfully expressive floral still life by Colette Pujol (1913–1999), a Brazilian painter, draftsman, and teacher whose formal artistic training took her from São Paulo and Salvador to Paris. Pujol studied painting with Antonio Rocco and later at the Escola de Belas Artes in Salvador under Presciliano Silva. In 1946, she received a French government scholarship to continue her studies in Paris, where she attended the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian, remaining in Europe until 1949. Guiadas Artes
Her career extended well beyond her own studio practice. After returning to Brazil, Pujol established a private painting and drawing school and later taught at the Associação Paulista de Belas Artes. Her work received recognition in juried exhibitions, including an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français, and her paintings are represented in Brazilian museum collections. Wikipedia
Pujol worked across landscapes, figures, still lifes, and particularly florals; documented works include numerous paintings of flowers in oil on canvas, board, and panel. MutualArt This example is especially joyful, with an exuberant bouquet of raspberry, red, lavender, creamy yellow, blush pink, and fiery orange blooms arranged in a faceted brown vase.
Loose, dimensional brushwork gives each flower its own personality, while the moody blue-gray ground keeps the saturated palette from becoming overly sweet. The geometric vase and unusual curved tabletop bring a distinctly modern structure to the otherwise traditional floral subject.
