PAUL WEGNER is one of the country's most successful figurative artists and an inventor of the fragmented style, in which only highlights of a composition are present, with the open or negative spaces implying "what is absent." The fragmented style is especially effective in Wegner's works because the positive/negative relationships create visual rhythms like the rhythms of music.
