American sterling silver cigarette case by R. Blackinton & Col, with an engine-turned striped exterior and gilt-washed patterned interior. The case retains its interior cigarette holder and bears the GAS monogram. Marked STERLING with the R. Blackinton & Co. maker's mark and the number 6111. Measures approximately 4 1/2 inches x 3 inches and weighs 135 grams. Estimated date: earl to mid-20th century.
This case comes from the family of Commodore George Albert Seitz, U.S. Navy (1847-1947). and bears his monogram. As Captain of the USS Bunker Hill during World War II, Seitz was in command when the carrier was struck by two kamikaze aircraft off Okinawa on May 11, 1945. One of the deadliest single attacks on a surviving U.S. aircraft carrier of World War II with 396 sailors killed and another 264 wounded.
