Purvis Young (1943-2010): Born in Miami, he spent most of his life in Overtown as s self taught artist whose own study of art history gave him a sophisticated knowledge of subjects. Often Young took to the canvas to express his personal views, concerns and the way he viewed life. He then expanded these image to an idealistic state where the being was allowed to do what is inherent in his body and soul. He always stuck to his roots often painting on found and discarded objects that were symbolic of his neighborhoods poverty. It was there in the 1970s where he had his first public display of art, a grand mural that could be see from the newly rectified I-395 which desecrated Overtown. Today he is regarded as one of South Florida's most celebrated artists with his works exhibited from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to The Bass Museum and Miami Museum of Art.
