Jim Dine (1935-): One of the most historically important American artists to emerge from the pop art movement of the 1960s. Instead of fading into the background as many pop artists did after the movement's massive popularity passed, Jim Dine's flexibility as an artist has allowed him to remain relevant. His use of multiple mediums willingness to adapt his artistic style, and his ability to remain culturally important as a celebrity figure have all helped contribute to the impressive longevity of his career. In 1962, Jim Dine participated in what is considered by most critics to be the world's first show featuring pop art. It was titled New Paintings of Common Objects and put on in conjunction with other famous pop artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Joe Goode. Dine's pop art was different than many of his contemporaries. Dine; however, injected his feelings and personal experiences into his work, making his pop art representation of everyday experiences with everyday objects. The rock musical Hair got its name from a famous Dine piece by the same name. While much of his art nods to his pop art roots, he also is a skillful and popular artist of the human figure and cross cultural objects and themes. Jim Dine's ability to evolve has kept him extremely popular throughout his long career.
