An exquisite antique Chinese multi-tiered wedding basket, beautifully hand-crafted in woven split bamboo with rich black lacquer finishes. Traditionally used in ceremonial celebrations, this 4-compartment piece features detailed woven lattice work, sturdy original joinery, and a rich, aged patina that reflects its authentic heritage. These wedding baskets were called tiálǎn or bakul siah, and were built with 2, 3, or 4 stacking tiers, with the following significance:
Generational Abundance & Layered Blessings: Stacking compartments symbolize stacking levels of prosperity, harmony, and good fortune for the new household.
Separation of Ceremonial Gifts: During the Guo Da Li (betrothal gift exchange), each distinct tier was assigned to carry specific ceremonial items so they would not touch:
Top Tier: Held smaller, valuable items like gold jewelry, red envelopes (ang pow), and the formal betrothal contract.
Middle Tiers: Held dried auspicious foods (such as dried longans, lotus seeds, red dates, and peanuts), tea leaves, and ceremonial wines.
Bottom Tier: Held substantial gifts, bolts of silk, embroidered textiles, or wedding slippers..
