Pacific-centered Mercator Projection world map, drawn by Pierre Lapie and published by Magimel, Anselin, et Pochard in "Atlas Classique Et Universel De Geographie Ancienne Et Moderne" , 1816 edition. The detail is mostly physical: mountains, lakes, and rivers; only a handful of cities marked on the map, including Paris, London, Washington, Rio de Janeiro, "St. Petersbourg" and "Pekin". The polar regions remain largely unexplored, as does central Africa. Alaska ("Amerique Russe") is properly depicted as part of the Russian Empire. France's short-lived claim to southern Australia ("Nouvelle Hollande") is also depicted.
Hand colored on heavy paper with a strong steel engraving impression. Sheet size: 14-1/2 x 19-1/2 inches; map size: 11 x 16 inches. Folded as issued. Mint condition. A very attractive medium-sized map of the world with some interesting details by an important cartographer.
Pierre Lapie (1777–1850) was an eminent French cartographer, geographer, and engraver active during the early 19th century. He is highly regarded for creating detailed and aesthetically beautiful maps that bridged the gap between military surveying and commercial atlas production.
