Beneath it, a turned knop gives way to a slender spiral column, and the whole rests on a tripod base of three boldly scrolled legs. The dark, rich finish sets off the rhythm of the twist, so the stand reads as much like sculpture as furniture.

Barley twist turning first flourished in English furniture of the Charles II and William and Mary periods. It returned in the Jacobean Revival of the early twentieth century, when pieces like this were made for halls and drawing rooms. This example carries that heritage in a compact, versatile form.

The 10-inch top is sized for a Boston fern, an orchid, a small bust or a candlestick. At 33 inches tall it adds height without bulk in an entry, on a stair landing or beside a reading chair. A pair of stands flanking a doorway or mantel would look especially handsome.

Dimensions: 33 in. H x 11.5 in. W x 11.5 in. D; usable top surface 10 in. diameter.
