Beautifully scaled and exceptionally well preserved, this two-piece set was conceived as true furniture in miniature—not simply as a toy.

The secretary is constructed in solid wood believed to be cherry, selected for its warm reddish tone, fine closed grain, and beautifully flowing patterns. Its slant-front panel opens to create a practical writing surface and reveals a fitted interior with six pigeonhole-style cubbies in graduated widths. A full-width open compartment beneath the cubbies provides space for books, stationery, or small treasures, while a lower drawer adds additional concealed storage.

Thoughtful cabinetmaking details include individually fitted components, shaped side supports flowing into slender legs, solid-wood drawer runners, traditional wood dowels, decorative brass hinges, a brass articulated writing-surface support, and simple brass-tone knobs. The coordinating chair echoes the desk’s craftsmanship with a spindle back, plank seat, tapered square legs, stretchers, and subtly peaked posts.

No maker’s label or production markings were found. The construction, fitted proportions, workshop assembly details, and absence of standardized factory markings support identification as a custom-made or small-workshop piece by an unknown cabinetmaker.

The complete matched set is especially desirable: child-size secretaries are considerably less common than conventional school desks or roll-top desks, and surviving examples are rarely accompanied by their original coordinating chairs.
