This expressive mid-century work depicts a reclining female nude within an intimate interior, rendered with loose, confident brushwork and a richly textured surface.

The composition combines muted earth tones, cream, charcoal, green, and blue with brighter passages of color in the foreground. Levene’s treatment of the figure, textiles, and surrounding forms gives the painting an expressive, distinctly mid-century character.

Signed and dated “LEVENE 60” vertically along the left side of the composition.

Presented in a period gilt wood frame that complements the painting beautifully.

Constance Levene Kane was a 20th-century American artist whose work included figurative painting, abstraction, watercolor, and drawing. She studied with artists Jack Tworkov and Alice Baber and moved within the New York art community during an important period in the development of Abstract Expressionism and postwar American modernism.

Levene was a longtime friend of Alice Baber and is reported to have introduced Baber to Abstract Expressionist painter Paul Jenkins, whom Baber later married. Her artistic circle connected her with prominent figures in the postwar art world, including artists, critics, curators, and gallerists.
