The canopy … Read more An antique Chinese Qing dynasty style canopy bed, which is sometimes called an opium bed or wedding bed. The canopy has an elaborately carved architectural frame in ebonized wood with red lacquer and gilt accents, decorative ceiling carvings, a raised platform, a densely carved front rail with openwork relief, scrolling floral and avian carvings, carved brackets and pendant finials resembling temple or palace roof construction. The side rails are carved with archaic key-fret patterns and gilt medallions and the interior has a shelf and two drawers for personal items. The front legs are boldly carved with scrolling floral and curled feet. No maker’s mark.
