Saarinen sought to eliminate what he famously described as the “slum of legs” beneath tables and chairs, replacing the conventional four-legged structure with a single sculptural pedestal.

The result is both functional and architectural: a clean, uninterrupted silhouette that helped redefine modern dining furniture and remains instantly recognizable decades later. The design is part of Saarinen’s celebrated Pedestal Collection for Knoll and has become an enduring icon of 20th-century design.

This authentic Knoll example was purchased from Design Within Reach in 2018 and has been carefully maintained. It presents beautifully, with only minor scuffs consistent with normal use. See less
