Hand-painted low kang cabinet from Inner Mongolia or the Gansu/Qinghai border region, early 20th century. Four drawers flank a central double-door compartment, with carved scalloped end brackets and original-style ring pulls. The decoration is entirely hand-painted: peonies, lotus, magpies, and butterflies surrounding classic treasure-vase motifs on a warm yellow ground, framed in red and green. Two vertical Chinese inscription panels carry an auspicious couplet that includes the phrase "white jade and pearls stored within," a traditional blessing for a storage chest.
At 57" wide and 18" tall it's a rare size: genuinely antique presence in the exact footprint of a modern low media console, and it works beautifully under a mounted TV, at the foot of a bed, or as an entry piece.
Condition: structurally sound and sturdy. The painted decoration is vivid and largely intact. The dark-finished top shows honest, significant wear (see photos), and there are signs of past restoration including re-stained wood and touch-up around hardware, consistent with pieces of this age and origin. Sold as-is; all condition details photographed.
