Harry Gottlieb (1895–1992) was an influential American painter, printmaker, and educator best known for his powerful contributions to Social Realism and the New Deal WPA (Works Progress Administration) art programs.
Key Highlights of His Life and Career:
Early Life & Education: Born in Bucharest, Romania, Gottlieb immigrated to the United States with his family in 1907, eventually settling in Minneapolis. He studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design in New York.
The WPA & Social Realism: During the Great Depression, Gottlieb worked with the Federal Art Project (FAP/WPA). His work frequently focused on the daily lives of working-class people, industrial laborers, agricultural workers, and social issues of the era. His scenes capture both the hardship and the quiet dignity of ordinary workers.
Pioneering Printmaker: Beyond painting and gouache, Gottlieb played a crucial historical role in the development of screenprinting (serigraphy) as a fine-art medium during the 1930s and 40s. He was a leader in organizations like the Artists Union and Artists Congress.
Museum Collections: Today, his works are housed in prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
